You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
In the end, when looking at a thing in retrospect, there are only two questions: What would I have done differently, and what could I have done differently? And if the answer to the latter question is ‘nothing’ then it follows that the answer to the former must be too. That being the case, all there is to do is look at how you care for the soft animal, how you tend its wounds. How you love it, and let it be love and loved.
