12. A song from your pre- teen years
I was a massive fan of the Pet Shop Boys in my late tweens. Massive, huge, obsessive. We spent our holidays at my Grandparents’ house in Germany in the summer of 1987 and then drove home via Belgium, France and Italy. I listened to ‘Paninaro’ on rewind and repeat for days, wishing I was old enough to hang out in sandwich shops and smoke cigarettes with dapper boys called Gio and Andrea. This is my favourite of their songs by a short distance. Obviously I only had the dimmest of ideas as to what it was about, although I wasn’t totally clueless.
Incidentally I was completely in love with Neil Tennant, although for some reason I never had the kind of romantic puppyish fantasies I later indulged in with Matt from Bros or Larry Mullen Jr from U2. Funny, that.
